Chapter 2: Before you appeal
If any of these options are still available to you, this is good news. They are more expedient, less formal, and typically more effective than a full appeal (not to mention, a lot less work).
- If you are mid-way through a course you’re failing, talk to your Teaching Assistant and/or your Professor as soon as possible. Ask for extensions for assignments and tests. Ask for extra help. Tell them (in brief) about what you’re struggling with, submit supporting documentation if requested (or if you’re not getting a positive response) such as a note from a doctor or mental health professional, and be specific about what you’re asking for in terms of a timeline for when they can expect the missing work. If it’s possible to get back on track and finish the course, this is the best option with the least formal intervention needed.
Four options are left out here.
Even if any of the above steps don’t work out for you (for example, you ask for an extension and are denied), doing them will show you were trying to get help and resolve things in the moment. This will be useful evidence for a later appeal if needed.

The truth about appeals
Here’s what they don’t tell you.
An appeal is a structured case. You state the decision, the process, the evidence, and the remedy you want. Retelling your story is not enough. Check your letter for your exact date.

Does this cover my school’s specific policies?
Every school has its own procedure. The Guide shows you how to find your school’s policy and build a case that fits it. It does not replace your school’s rules or legal advice.
Is it allowed to get help with my appeal?
Yes. Schools expect you to prepare. You write and submit your own appeal. The Guide shows you how to organize it.
Does this help with an AI or cheating accusation?
Yes. Chapter 7 covers academic misconduct appeals. It keeps the focus on evidence and your school’s process.
Will I receive future updates?
Yes. Every update to the Guide is free. Sign in and the newest version is there.
Who wrote it?
